Top 10 Cartoons of the 90's

By - J

I know this post says top 10 but it doesn't truly do justice tothe TV shows 90's kids like me grew up. At SGL we've thought long and hard about the shows that we loved the most growing up, and we hope you'll enjoy our list. The majority of these shows were shows we personally watched on YTV and Teletoon here in Toronto. So sit back and enjoy the nostalgia.

10. Pokemon

I'll tell you why this doesn't make number 1. Pokemon is still a  running show and is going strong, due to this it just doesn't deserve the title of number 1. Nintendo's done a lot of work to keep releasing new games to try and keep Pokemon relevant, but no matter how many shows they have it will never touch the original Pokemon we grew up with.

9. Digimon

I know what your thinking. Oh shit. I completely forgot about this show. When we were brainstorming the shows and someone said this i was instantly intrigued and knew this had to be one of the top 10. You'll remember familiar characters like Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, T.K. and Kari who are sucked into an alternate digital dimension where they are companioned by Digimon to defeat the evil that has shrouded the Digital World.

8. Beasties (or Beast Wars if you're American)

Beasties was a spin off of the original transformers franchise but was one of the best adaptations of it they had made. It starts off after the Maximals (Autobots) and Predacons (Decepticons) crash land on a mysterious planet and take on forms of "beasts" and fossilized dinosaurs on the planet to survive from the overwhelming energon.

7.  Rugrats

The Rugrats was one of those shows that I never really knew what was going on but made me laugh. It would take you away into the minds of the kids daily lives. In 1997 was really the point where Rugrats took off with the Rugrats movie.

6. Johnny Bravo

In this comedy filled show we follow Johnny Bravo the Elvis impersonating, Kung Fu fighting guy who taught us SWAG and how to pick up women (ineffectively). He introduced the "gino" style long before Pauly D and the Jersey Shore. Poor guy would never get a break.

5.  Arthur

Arthur is one of those shows that i would watch either right before school or after school. Arthur was that show I could relate to considering he was around my age at the time. It follows Arthurs daily life with his family and friends Buster, Francine, the brain and many more. Arthurs life is easily the best representation of a 90's student life.

4. Country Mouse and City Mouse

When i first thought of this show I couldn't help but laugh. This is possible one of the greatest shows on TV. It followed country mouse Emily and City mouse Alexander as they travel to visit there cousins all over the world and meeting new friends. All while evading rats and other troubles as well!

3. Magic School Bus

This is one of the shows that if the day ever comes where I have kids, i'm sitting down and having them watch this. Not only is this show fun to watch it's also quite educational and this is probably the show that made me do so well in science in elementary school. Led by the energetic Ms Frizzle, the gang goes on the magical school bus to get first hand experience with learning. I wish this were real and had a teacher like this in elementary school.

2. X-Men

We had to put in a Marvel comic show, and mind you it wasn't easy there were other top competitors for the spot as well such as Batman and Spider man. The cartoon X-men is probably the best adaptation of the comic ever, i don't think i even enjoyed the movies as much as this cartoon. In the movie characters like Gambit and Jubilee were taken out as main characters and since i had grown up with them i was like WTF? They also transformed Rogue into a terrible character considering in the show she was one of the most powerful; to a frail young girl in the movie couldn't be more of a disappointment. This is definitely one of the shows of the 90's that I could watch over and over again.

Check out our playlist of all the shows we can remember that weren't part of this Top 10.
